If you’ve been following me for awhile, you probably already know that I LOVE PROTEIN BARS.  When I first started tracking macros, protein bars were an easy way for me to get in enough protein while also satisfying my sweet tooth.  Since there are so many choices of protein bars out there, I obviously had to try them all (or at least get close).  I soon had a whole kitchen drawer devoted to protein bars.  That was a few years ago and since then I have significantly decreased the amount of protein bars I’m eating for a couple of reasons:

  1. Eating real food is more important than hitting my protein goal.  At some point last year I came to the realization that I was choosing processed foods over whole foods because of their macronutrient content.  For example, if I wanted an apple or an banana but it would put me over the amount of carbs I was supposed to have that day and under in protein, I would have protein chips instead.  My overall goal is to be healthy and fuel my body so I realized that I shouldn’t prioritize macronutrients over micronutrients.  This also made me realize that I should probably eat something more micronutrient dense than protein bars every day.  While they’re great for an on-the-go snack, they shouldn’t be an every day thing.
  2. My digestion was suffering.  All the high-protein bar companies (Quest, PEScience, No Cow, etc. ) will advertise you how much protein are in a bar but few will tell you how much FIBER is also in it.  Most protein bars contain a high amount of fiber (10+ grams) to make them taste good.  Quest bars have ~15 grams of fiber while No Cow bars have ~18g of fiber.  The Mayo clinic suggests that “women should try to eat at least 21 to 25 grams of fiber a day, while men should aim for 30 to 38 grams a day.”  While these bars may be good for someone who has trouble getting enough fiber in their diet, I had the opposite problem.  Since I typically eat things like quinoa, vegetables, bananas, apples, nuts, etc. I found that it was hard for me to eat LESS fiber! With these bars, I was easily eating over 45g of fiber a day which was not good for my digestion.

So why am I telling you all this?? Well, I still think that protein bars are a great snack if you need something quick, easy, nutritious and delicious; however, in the past year I’ve become VERY picky about which protein bars I’ll buy for the reasons mentioned above. They need to be relatively low fiber (under 5 grams) and not loaded with a bunch of ingredients I can’t pronounce. Oh and tasty of course! I know RX Bars fit this criteria and are quite popular but I don’t like the texture and it takes me way too long to eat one!

This brings me to my new favorite bars: Jimmy Bars!  I started following them on Instagram a few weeks ago and contemplated ordering some but was hesitate because they market their bars as low sugar and made from real food.  This made me think they’d probably taste like RX bars which I dislike… I didn’t want to buy a whole box and be disappointed.  BUT luckily for me, they reached out to me asking if they could send me some bars to try!  Of course, I said yes!

I received a box of 9 flavors and have to say I was pleasantly surprised!  They have low fiber, low sugar, minimal ingredients and taste great!  They are not overly sweet (another thing I hate in protein bars) but are sweet enough that I feel like I’m treating myself.  They come in two sizes which I think is great depending on how hungry you are. You can get the smaller size which is around 100 calories per bar or you can get the regular size which is around 250 calories per bar.

I also love the creative packaging and how each bar gives you something a little different besides just flavor.  For example, the “Wake It Up” bar contains as much caffeine as one cup of coffee and the “Beauty” bar is boosted with collagen to help promote skin, hair and nail health.

Not only are these bars delicious but they are minimally processed and contain significantly less ingredients than your average protein bar.  AND they’re ingredients that you’ve heard of and can pronounce.  These will definitely be my new go-to bars! 😀
